Scientific motivation

TAS team

The installation of the US-Japan triple axis spectrometer at HFIR's cold guide 4 (CG4) is a continuation of the long standing US-Japan Collaboration on Neutron Scattering between ISSP and BNL, now with the cooperation of ORNL and JAERI. With the construction of HFIR's cold source and guide hall comes the opportunity to create the second cold source triple axis in the US at modest expense using in part some existing resources.

The first (and currently the only) such spectrometer in the US, SPINS, is in high demand, so our instrument will be busy once commissioning is complete. Moreover, we expect that our larger monochromator angle range and the use of adjustable arm lengths will give our instrument added versatility. In addition to outside users, we expect to support current active experimental programs of BNL, ORNL, and ISSP and seed collaboration and cooperation between researchers from these institutions.
